Pha An

pha-anPha-an, the capital of the Kayin State, the homeland of Kayin national races, is 168 miles (270 km) east of Yangon. Recently open to foreign travelers, Hpa-an can be reached by road from Yangon across a bridge over the Thanlwin River.

It is a small, energetic and friendly town on the banks of the Thanlwin River. As of agriculture, paddy is the main crop while other crops are also grown.

A few tourist attractions, though they are scattered around the beautiful surrounding countryside, make worthwhile and ideal trip for the visitors. Major attractions are: Mt. Zwekabin, 722 m high, the tallest of
a chain of lime stone mountains, is the landmark of Hpaan.

The summit commands fantastic views over the countryside. Kawkun Cave, a sacred site, eight miles south of Hpa-an is the hidden gallery of 7th Century artwork within.

One can see thousands of Buddha images and carvings inside the cave. Kyauk Kalap, the sole column of rock, standing sheer out of a lake is one of the most popular beauty spots for sightseers. Saddar Cave, a breathtakingly huge cavern contains a pagoda near the entrance with many Buddha images.
